Avi Buffalo Music

Article by: Danny

Avi Buffalo Music is band I discovered through Boris Smile as Avi is their guitarist and the reason for the name of the band. I didn't have too much time to get to know the history of ABM when they came in to do a set as they were booked double that night and had to fly to a show as soon as we tracked their songs. However, I think that very happening sums this band up perfectly. They are busy, very busy. It is truly refreshing to see such a young local band not only creating unique music that places you right in the middle of their distant universe but also working and playing shows so frequently to new and diverse audiences. When they arrived at the shop they were all very polite and soft-spoken. They seemed nice enough and warm. We set up in somewhat of a hurry to get things rolling and they began to play.

The first song was Coaxed which is one of those great rolling jam songs where it seems to keep going on but you don't mind in the least bit. It finds its grove and stays in it and brings you along. Then came I'm so exclusive which explored a little more of what felt to me as the experimental aspect of ABM it gets out there and creates a deep space for you to explore. These types of songs have always been something I need to be in the mood for but none the less it was great and at the end of the day that might just make me a square. What do i know? The last song they played was I'm getting to old for this. This song was my favorite, it immediately highlighted one of my favorite things about the band; the melodies! Avi sings in his one of a kind voice simple direct lyrics in a melody so perfcect I wonder if I'll ever be able to use the phrase "I'm getting too old for this" again without thinking of the melody Avi tied it to.

I'm no critic but I know what I like and how musicians make ME feel. This band was really kind, really honest, their music was good and it fit them. I believed it all the way through and never once in the day I spent with them felt like I was watching anyone trying to create something they weren't.

I like Avi Buffalo Music.

Pre-production.

The Shop Sessions. are based on the idea that there is a lot of talent I have encountered playing with and around all of the honest local bands in southern California, specifically Long Beach and the surrounding areas. After putting a lot of time and effort into building a small studio in Downey I decided that the best way to encourage and help these bands come together as a community and share their music with not only each other but each others fans would be to have it come together in one place.
So, in my studio dubbed The Shop (mostly due to its location tucked away above the family business, an auto body shop) I am inviting any band with an honest approach and something interesting to share to come in and play a live set to be recorded and posted on this blog as a free(always free!) download with pictures of the session and a short article or interview about/with the band.
We're just finishing moving in the last pieces of gear to the studio and the first session will be with Boris Smile to be recorded on the 18th of this month and hopefully up for download by the following Friday!
